Burns: Essential Oils for Skin Burns

Let me tell you a story.

One night, I was making dinner for my family. It happens sometimes. 🙂 I had two different pans in the oven, one on the lower rack, and one on the upper rack. The oven was set to 450 degrees fahrenheit. As you must with a conventional oven, I cooked the food for about half the cooking time, and then needed to rotate the pans to switch racks so that they would cook evenly.

I grabbed my oven mitt, took the first pan out of the oven and placed it on the stovetop. I took the other pan and moved it to the other rack.

Then, with my bare hand, and without thinking, I grabbed the pan from the stovetop and went to move it to the oven.

Of course, I didn’t get that far. I had one of those surreal moments where I looked at my hand and looked at the pan and thought “This is going to be bad.”

Then the pain kicked in. That was a 450 degree pan, and boy could I tell. I dropped the pan, yelped a bit, and put my hand under running cold water. Blisters had immediately started to form.

I told my husband to get me the Lavender and Helichrysum, and he ran and grabbed them. My throbbing fingers were still under cold water. When he returned, I took my hand out of the water and dried it off, and we dripped a drop of each oil on each place that was blistering. I spent the next 5-10 minutes slowly massaging the oils into my burned hand.

When I was done, the blisters were gone. The throbbing had stopped. The skin was only slightly red, and it was nearly impossible to tell that I had been holding a 450 degree pan with my bare hand only minutes before. If I angled my hand just right, I could see that the skin looked a little bit shiny in those places, but that was all.

I was dumbfounded.

I work as a professional quilter, and had thought as I ran my hand under water, that this injury would have a profound effect only my upcoming deadlines. Obviously having a burned hand and constantly using that hand wasn’t going to work. I was stunned that after using two simple oils, I was completely injury-free.

I kind-of wondered if I was some kind of freak of nature, or if the pan really wasn’t that hot. You know, all the ways we rationalize when something miraculous and logic defying happens. But then, a few months later, my cousin’s husband called me in a bit of a panic, and told me that his wife (my cousin) had had an accident with a hot glue gun a few hours earlier. She had severely burned several of her fingers and was in agonizing pain. He was on his way to my house.

I gave him two little sample bottles of lavender and helichrysum, and told them to put the oils on the burns immediately, and then every hour or so as needed.

The following is a text I received from my cousin the next morning:

BurnThumb

“This pic is from this morning. Thank goodness for the oils! This is undoubtedly the worst burn I’ve ever had. I can’t imagine what it would look like today without your help last night. The image doesn’t really show how remarkable it is. If you could have seen how truly intense this burn was last night you would shudder. The red spot [in the picture] inside white spot is a second degree burn where the blister itself has fused back to the flesh underneath. It was horribly blistered by the time K [her husband] got back last night, and even putting the oils on was enough to send me through the top of the pain scale. I’m pretty tough so that says a lot. Nevertheless at this point, having used the oil since last night it’s virtually painless unless I press against it directly. It’s not even swollen!!”

And another text, 48 hours later:

BurnThumb2

“I can’t wait for you to see it up close.  I just have to show this to someone. Literally nothing short of a miracle. It looks like I’m not even going to lose the skin!!! No blisters, no peeling, it feels a little stiff like a callous. I’m dying to tell the world!!!”

Turns out, I’m not a freak of nature.

These oils are miraculous. I am so relieved to know I have the knowledge and the tools in my own home to help heal my family with natural, safe, from our own Mother Earth oils.
